Base Coat for Gel Polish: Step-by-Step Technique for Nail Technicians

Correct base coat application is the foundation of long-lasting gel manicures. In this article we break down step by step how to get a flawless result without lifting or chipping.

What you'll need

  • Degreaser and dehydrator
  • Gel polish base coat
  • Gel polish in your chosen color
  • Top coat (non-tacky)
  • UV/LED lamp
  • 180/240 grit file — for example, WonderFile

Step 1: Prep the nail plate

Shape the nail with a 180-grit file, moving in one direction. Lightly buff the surface to improve base coat adhesion. Brush away the dust.

Step 2: Degreasing

Apply dehydrator to the nail plate with a lint-free wipe. Don't touch the treated surface with your fingers — skin oils will break the adhesion. Let it dry for 30 seconds.

Step 3: Apply the base coat

Apply a thin layer of base, leaving a 1–1.5mm gap from the cuticle. Cap the sidewalls. Seal the free edge. Cure in the lamp: LED — 60 sec, UV — 120 sec.

Step 4: First layer of gel polish

Apply a thin layer of gel polish using the same motions. A thin layer cures evenly with no bubbles. Seal the free edge. LED — 60 sec.

Step 5: Second layer and top coat

Apply a second layer if coverage isn't opaque enough. Finish with a non-tacky top coat. Seal the free edge. LED — 60–120 sec depending on the top coat.

Pro tip: never let base coat or gel polish touch the cuticle — that's the main cause of lifting after 3–5 days. If product gets on the skin, remove it with a cuticle stick before curing.
