Depilation Prep and Aftercare: Avoiding Ingrown Hairs
The treatment itself takes minutes, but smooth, irritation-free results without ingrown hairs are decided before and after the appointment. Here's the protocol both technician and client should follow at home.
Skin prep
- Hair length: ideally 4–5mm (for sugaring, from 2–3mm). Too short won't be gripped, too long tears more painfully.
- Exfoliate 1–2 days before: removes dead skin and frees up "trapped" hairs.
- Clean, dry skin: degreasing before the treatment improves grip and reduces hair breakage.
Right after the treatment
Skin is irritated and vulnerable. For the first 24–48 hours, avoid hot showers, saunas, pools, exercise, tight clothing, direct sun, and self-tanner. This prevents irritation and pigmentation.
Preventing ingrown hairs
The main enemy of smoothness is ingrowth. After 3–4 days, resume gentle exfoliation twice a week along with moisturizing. Exfoliation and hydration keep hair from getting "trapped" under the skin.
Client checklist
- 1–2 days before: exfoliate
- Day of treatment: clean skin, no creams
- 48 hours: no heat, friction, or sun
- From day 3–4: regular exfoliation and moisturizing
This protocol turns a one-time treatment into consistently smooth skin and reduces ingrown hairs over time.
